“Here we have two excellent opportunities to hear the exceptional
bassist, Kjell Jansson-his own album, Crossover, and Gilbert Holmstrom's
inspired quartet recording, The Mandelbrot Set.
“Crossover enjoys
a rather diverse track selection, almost like a compilation album. In
addition to the jazz quartet featured on the CD, four of the eight
tracks add a string quartet and vocalist.
Jansson wrote all of the
music, arrangements, and most of the lyrics”... three of the pieces
that use the larger ensemble and are charming, contemplative
ballads-particularly pleasing and nicely recorded”... showcases the
soloing talents of pianist Tommy Kotter and the lovely vocals of Annika
Skoglund”... The four tunes with Janssons’s quartet”... are
jazz-infused”... with brief heads that serve as springboards into freely
improvised solos, resulting is some excellent musical dialogue among the
players. A good example can be heard on Free One, a kickin' tune all
through, but the interaction between pianist Tommy Kotter and drummer
Goran Kroon is especially noteworthy. This is a wonderful album for
listeners with all kinds of musical tastes. The instruments are superbly
recorded, and the performances are uniformly first-rate”... If you are
unfamiliar with the stellar bass playing of Kjell Jansson, you should
remedy this as soon as possible, and Crossover and The Mandelbrot Set
are very good places to start”.
